? Job title: head of buying - staple grocery and non-food

? Date joined the company: November 2004

? Previous occupation: store management for Somerfield

? Responsible for: dried and packet grocery, frozen food & bakery, greetings cards, hosiery, health & beauty, stationery, batteries & seasonal non-foods

? Offer one piece of advice to help suppliers succeed with you: an open and honest approach sustained with consistent integrity is the best formula for a successful and long-term relationship

? The best promotion currently running with our customers is: Herbal Essences Shampoo/Conditioner 250ml range, buy one get one free

? The best current TV/press advertising is: the Chicago town pizza commercial - daughter complains that she prefers a thin & crispy pizza and mum promptly uses a mallet on the pizza to grant her wish

? The best new product launch this year is: Magners Original Irish Cider

? Gripe of the month (say what upsets you most): branded suppliers who do not operate a level playing field with our business in comparison to multiple retailers and make it more difficult for independent retailers to compete effectively.

The high frequency of shoppers' visits to our retailers stores enables suppliers to increase the visibility of their products and drive sales. But our consumers (who are the same consumers who shop with multiple retailers) also expect to see competitive promotion activity.

The two things are intrinsically linked.
