The Association of Convenience Stores is setting up a Community Shops Campaign Trust to assist it in the campaign for a fairer grocery market. It is calling on all neighbourhood retailers to support the fund with a suggested £5 per member of staff contribution.
David Rae, chief executive of the ACS, said: "We are now faced with a once in a lifetime chance to secure the future for small businesses and retail diversity in the UK. Waiting is not an option and although political pressure may help the competition authorities have to be the key focus."
The Community Shops Campaign Trust will help fund the costs of activity through to 2008. It will authorise all expenditure and will be a forum for all contributors to be represented.
