Metro Group, parent company of Makro, has gone live with the second generation of the RFID (radio frequency identification) technology in its cash and carry stores throughout Germany.

Metro Cash & Carry is using an RFID system that includes Intermec's second generation IF5 RFID reader coupled with IBM software.

The update was chosen for its capacity to successfully track and trace pallets and to improve inventory management, but also for its ability to read mixed-mode tags. The IF5 RFID reader can collect information from both first generation and second generation RFID tags and can be used in environments where there may be mixed tags.

Intermec and Metro Group are looking to introduce case-level track and trace capabilities this summer.

Gerd Wolfram, managing director of MGI Metro Group Information Technology, said: "The partnership with Intermec, in creating a live second generation RFID infrastructure at Metro Cash & Carry, confirms both companies' commitment to pioneering use of this new technology."
