He is manager of the 1m sq ft warehouse at Saltash, in Cornwall. He joined the company 10 years ago as an assembler in the warehouse and became team leader in 2001.

He will be in charge of the warehouse that provides grocery products to 350 Spar convenience stores throughout the south west, via a fleet of 20 heavy goods vehicles. He takes over from Brian Logan, who was warehouse manager for two years.

Phillips said: "I am delighted to be appointed to this position, and have undertaken a comprehensive training programme to assist me in fulfilling this challenging and demanding role."
