Specialist confectionery cash and carry Hancocks has closed its Stockton-on-Tees branch after a review of the business.

Hancocks ceo Andrew Hancock said: “We have taken the tough decision to close Stockton and concentrate on developing our Newcastle site in the north east.

“We will then continue to look for new sites in both the north and south of the country, hoping to open one new cash and carry during 2006, with more to follow soon afterwards. The Hancocks portfolio is set to get stronger.”

All customers of the Stockton branch have been offered incentives to try the Newcastle depot, which is 17,000sq ft, compared to Stockton’s 10,000sq ft, and Stockton manager John Burton is working at the Newcastle branch to help them settle in.

“The future is very bright at Hancocks and we have had a good year during 2005. Part of moving the business forward is going to involve making difficult decisions from time to time, to ensure that we have a full complement of effective branches,” added Hancock.
