Lloyd Maunder, which supplies meat and poultry to a wide range of customers including caterers and wholesalers, has bought the Dewhurst butchery chain.

Some 109 shops and 500 staff will join the Lloyd Maunder group, which already has its own chain of butchers shops in Devon.

“This may seem like a major departure for our company and a new trading direction,” said Andrew Maunder, commercial director of the West Country company, “but in fact our family has operated butchers shops since the 1880s.

“We have expertise in regional sourcing and quality presentation and a good feel for how consumer tastes in meat are changing.”

George Maunder, responsible for the Lloyd Maunder shops, will work closely with the existing management team including managing director Roger Reeson, and Terry Voss, newly appointed operations director, who was previously responsible for Safeway’s meat counters.
