Makro is aiming to increase its staff's understanding of customers' businesses by arranging for them to work in restaurants, pubs and caterers across the UK.

Beyond Back to the Floor is a training programme developed to allow employees to enhance their skills, learn more about the requirements of the industry and strengthen relations with key local customers. The aim is for the additional understanding gained by the Makro employees to enable them to add more value to their customer's businesses.

It aims to enable senior management, store managers and customer relationship to experience all aspects of their customers' businesses.

As a pilot project Adam Field, assistant general manager of Makro Charlton, spent two days at The Lotus Floating Restaurant in London Docklands and Andy Walsh, horeca manager for Makro, spent time at The Notting Grill in London, which is owned by Anthony Worrall Thompson.

The scheme will be rolled out at stores nationally in the coming months.
