Batleys Cash and Carry Group celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner and awards ceremony at York Racecourse attended by more than 650 people including retired staff.
The awards were presented by operations director Martin Race and Bestway Group chairman, Sir Anwar Pervez, and included a Lifetime Achievement Award for former managing director Len McCormick, who is now retired, for his contribution to the rapid growth in the number of depots run by the company.
Robin Smith was named Employee of the Half Century for tackling an armed gang at the Huddersfield depot, and Deryck Scargill, now retired, was named General Manager of the Half Century. Previously general manager of the Preston depot, he needed medical treatment after a chemical leak at the depot.
Larry Sadler, won the Big Idea of the Half Century award for coming up with the concept of a pets cash and carry, which is now a major part of the business. He is now retired, but was general manager of the Batleys Doncaster depot
Two companies won a Supplier of the Half Century Award, Walkers and Coca Cola.
