Makro is aiming to increase its recycling rates with a new contract with Severnside Recycling.
Makro plans to recycle over 6,000 tonnes of cardboard annually, as well as other materials such as plastics, which if sent to landfill would cost between £60 to £70 per tonne.
Severnside took over the contact in April and Tim Price, marketing manager at Severnside, said: "Within the goals of this new recycling and waste management contract we will be working alongside Makro to take even more packaging out of the waste stream, while initiating projects to identify new streams for recycling."
Makro has a 33-store network and has the recycling collected from the stores and taken to a local Severnside depot, baled and sent to paper mills for reprocessing.
Hannes Floto, managing director of Makro, said: "We're committed to our recycling and look forward to working with Severnside to bolster our strategy moving forwards."
