The independent sector returned to sales growth in 2007 and outperformed Tesco and Sainsbury over Christmas, according to Nielsen.
Speaking at the FWD annual conference, David Glennon, retail services manager at Nielsen, said sales in the independent sector were up 2.2% in 2007. This compared with figures for 2004, 2005 and 2006 of -4%, -2.2% and -2.3% respectively.
And Glennon said the independent sector had an even better Christmas. Taking the eight weeks to December 29, he said sales in the independent sector grew by 3.8%.
Ranking this in terms of sales growth against Christmas figures announced by the major retailers, he said the independent sector was third below Morrisons and Waitrose, but had beaten Sainsbury on 3.7% and Tesco on 3.1%.
Will Government proposals to ban the display of tobacco in retail premises damage the wholesale sector?
