A year after Makro Cash & Carry joined Today's, the two companies have announced they have ceased joint negotiations on terms and conditions, although they will still work together on other projects.
Rodney Hunt, managing director of Today's, said the size and complexity of the two organisations had meant they had not gelled and that very few joint negotiations had taken place.
The deal had covered overrider negotiations for the part of Makro's purchasing that was carried out solely in the UK. As part of the multinational Metro Group, some parts of Makro's purchasing, such as wine, were carried out by overseas parts of the business with particular expertise in that area.
In a joint statement released just before Christmas, the companies said: "From January 2008, Makro and Today's Group will each be responsible for negotiating their own terms and conditions with suppliers.
"The focus of both businesses is on adding value to customers."
Hunt emphasised that Makro remained a member of Today's and they hoped to work together in areas such as foodservice and retail clubs.
