Londis retailer Alan Fincham was one of thousands of independent retailers marking National Independents’ Day.
He dressed as Darth Vader and his staff dressed up as cartoon characters. “It was a fun day and the customers loved it,” said shop assistant Pat Wier.
Fincham said he recognised the role the local community has played in his store’s success.
He added: “My vision is to create a 21st century newsagent with a strong convenience offer.
“In spite of having a Sainsbury’s store directly opposite, I have still managed to push up sales in the last two years, by offering a specialist service.”
