Following the massive media overage of National Independents’ Day, the My Shop Is Your Shop campaign is recruiting a team of independent retailers to deliver new research to the Prime Minister.

The research by the Cranfield School of Management and commissioned by FWD, reveals overwhelming consumer anxiety at the erosion of local culture by the growth of the giant superstores.

The Cranfield research was also submitted to the Office of Fair Trading in response to its call for more evidence of the need for a review of the grocery market.

The report reveals that more than 80% of the population believes that the identity and culture of their town or region is under threat from the proliferation of national chains.

Alan Toft, MSYS chairman, said: “During the final Prime Minister’s Question Time before the election, Tony Blair said he would look at the issue of superstore power. This is why our team is delivering our research to Number 10.

“We want to remind him of his promise. This is reinforcing the lobbying activity to the OFT. Tony Blair has the clout that is needed to ensure the regulators take our activity seriously.”
