Wholesaler members of the Federation of Wholesale Distributors and MSYS professionals were at the printing plant of the Daily Mirror on Thursday May 26 to toast a special historic issue.

They saw the National Independents’ Day (NID) money-off coupon edition rolling off the giant presses at the plant at Oldham, Lancashire.

Money off big brands – Coca-Cola, Heinz, Uncle Ben’s, Robinsons, Fosters, Doritos and KitKat/Aero – formed the first ever national generic promotion of its kind exclusively for independents.

Nearly 10 million money-off coupons were in circulation for NID, to be redeemed at independents as part of the celebration.

In Scotland the coupons appeared in the Daily Record. Both papers carried editorial support for NID and MSYS.

Every major wholesaler in the UK, whether members of FWD or not, was stocked with the products in preparation for retailer demand.

Cash and carries displayed giant posters announcing the deals and played a special CD jingle to alert customers to NID.
