A major initiative stressing the environmental benefits of local shops is being planned by the FWD's My Shop is Your Shop campaign.
The PR Action Group (PRAG), which organises MSYS, is planning a WASP (Walk And Shop Please) day during National Independents' Week next year, to emphasise the fact that consumers don't need to use environmentally damaging cars to get to their local shops.
With NIW starting on Monday June 2 next year, PRAG is proposing Wednesday June 4 should be WASP day.
MSYS chairman Alan Toft said: "If 50,000 independent retailers of all types supported WASP, this could be a big profile builder for wholesalers' customers."
Another proposal currently at the planning stage is a MSYS branded bag for life, which would resonate with campaigns currently trying to cut the billions of plastic bags which go to landfill every year.
