Three trade charities, the Confectioners Benevolent Fund, Caravan and NewstrAid have given their support to a new UK charitable coalition group, Benevolence Today. The group is made up of 31 charities, which between them helped 26,000 people last year.

The aims of this new coalition are to raise the awareness and understanding of benevolence, to encourage more people in need to apply for support, and to increase efficiency across charitable sector by referring applicants to appropriate sources of help.

The initial phase of the campaign will be to set up and establish links with advice-giving organisations, such as Citizens Advice Bureaux and Money Advice Centres, which can point individuals in need towards the benevolent funds which are able to help.

The Confectioners Benevolent Fund director general Malcolm Carter said: "We are delighted to be involved in this worthwhile initiative. We want to reach out to those in need to offer our support. This is just one of the many ways we can help do that."
