Booker Group chief executive Charles Wilson has given himself the challenge of increasing profitability of Bill and Lesley Brown's store at Frankmarsh, Barnstaple, by £10,000 in the next 18 months.

Wilson visited the store on Saturday as part of National Independents' Week and worked as a consultant for the business, meeting staff and suggesting ideas and opportunities.

Wilson said: "Lesley and Bill run a shop that is at the heart of their local community. It was a privilege to spend the time working for them. I saw opportunities to increase their profits by £10 000 per annum. Booker will help them achieve this over the next 18 months. These lessons will be useful for Booker's other 74,000 retail customers."

Lesley's team will be working with Wilson and discussions are taking place about what changes will be made. She said: "This is a fantastic opportunity that would never have happened without National Independents' Week."

She added: "The week went very well. It has been a success and we've had lots of people through the door."
