T-shirts and hats are provided

Been there and got the t-shirt will be given new meaning for National Independents’ Day (NID) on June l – a kit including T-shirts, caps and balloons is being provided for retailers who have committed to the day.

These are the ‘community stars’ who have been interviewed by personnel at the Federation of Wholesale Distributors offices and who will receive a special package two weeks ahead of the event.

The pack consists of T-shirts, caps and balloons together with a manual including ideas for community involvement, and how to contact and use local radio and press.

Alan Toft, chairman of the campaign, said: “Names and addresses of star retailers have been provided to the FWD office on a secure confidential basis. This has helped us to construct a database of retailers who are positive about the campaign and who are willing to speak up for their sector when a local media opportunity arises.”

He said that this plan had been introduced to prevent wasteful distribution of material to wholesalers or retailers which was not specifically targeted.

“I would prefer to have 500 absolutely committed retailers who understand what we are trying to achieve rather than print material in bulk which we hope will find its way to retailers,” said Toft.

He said that every major cash and carry company, buying group and the majority of delivered wholesalers throughout the UK were involved in the activity. PRAG, the PR Action Group driving MSYS, was already drawing up plans for 2006, added Toft.
