Londis has announced retail sales figures of £1.2bn for 2006, an increase of 4% on a like for like basis.

The results were announced to retailers by Chris Martin, Musgrave Group's chief executive officer, at the Londis national retailer conference at the Celtic Manor Hotel in Wales.

At the event members were told the symbol group had achieved a number of other milestones including: an investment of £8.5m in the refurbishment of 171 stores; expansion of the Londis chilled and fresh range including more than 70 items of Londis branded fresh produce and a range of own brand sandwiches and wraps for consumers on the go; and the relaunch of the Londis own brand range consisting of more than 400 products.

Martin Hyson, managing director of Musgrave Budgens Londis, commented: "We are pleased with the increase in sales from our Londis retail partners. The performance in 2006 is testament to the ongoing innovation and ability to anticipate and meet the needs of the modern British consumer.

"By adopting a think local, act local philosophy, Londis retailers have been able to anticipate and deliver the needs of individual communities throughout the UK. This philosophy is at the heart of the Londis shopping experience.

"Londis employs over 20,000 people across the UK and retailers play a key economic and social role in their local communities. We support sustainable communities through sourcing and selling products from local suppliers, we provide jobs and support local sponsorships, initiatives and charitable causes."
