Makro UK's managing director Philipp Dautzenberg left at the end of December to become managing director of Makro Portugal.
Makro's parent company, Metro Cash & Carry, has appointed Hannes Floto as his successor. Dautzenberg had been in charge at Makro UK for three years and was previously managing director of Schaper Cash & Carry, which is also part of the Metro Group.
During his time at Makro UK Dautzenberg focused on organic growth for the wholesaler instead of opening new stores. He was also instrumental in developing a strong fresh foods offer for the company, including fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and cheese as a way of differentiating the chain from rivals.
Floto was previously food buying director of Makro Greece, following experience in Europe and the US, and took charge of Makro UK this month.
Floto said: "In 2005 Makro started an ambitious programme of modernising the store network, recently re-launching the Rayleigh store, developing its business with catering customers and implementing a best in class fresh food offer. I am looking forward to joining the UK team and driving the company's strategic positioning forward."
Will Government proposals to ban the display of tobacco in retail premises damage the wholesale sector?
