A poll that was conducted on ProWholesaler's website has shown a massive majority in favour of smaller case sizes for wholesalers. The poll asked "Should suppliers provide smaller case sizes for the wholesale sector?" and 70% of the votes cast said yes.

Commenting on the result, Parfetts Cash & Carry managing director Steve Parfett said smaller case sizes were needed by the wholesaler's customers, and would lead to increased ranges in smaller stores.

He said: "Cases of 24 or 48 are practical for a superstore, but not for smaller stores which are managing their stock on a daily basis."

For instance, he said, most small stores only had two or three lines of soups because they came in cases of 24 cans. "If they were supplied in sixes small stores would have greater ranges with much greater impact."
